Spring 2012 live streams on the Writing University begin with Paul's Book Club

The Spring 2012 series of live streams on the University of Iowa's Writing University website -- -- will begin with Paul's Book Club at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 10. Book aficionado Paul Ingram and his guests at Prairie Lights Books in downtown Iowa City will discuss Into the Heart of Borneo by London Times literary reviewer Redmond O'Hanlon.

This 1987 book is the story of a perilous journey to the center of Borneo, which no expedition had attempted since 1926. O'Hanlon was accompanied by poet James Fenton and three native guides. Among the potential hazards they faced were vipers, cholera, crocs, ticks, tuberculosis, malaria, rabies, and 1,700 types of parasitic worms, as they pursued their quest to view the fabled Borneo rhino.

In addition to his bestselling travel books -- including In Trouble Again, Congo Journey, and Trawler -- O'Hanlon has published scholarly work on 19th-century science and literature. For 15 years he was the natural history editor of the Times Literary Supplement.
