Pianist William Westney will present Un-Master Class at the UI
Pianist William Westney, who is well-know for his unique Un-Master Class workshops for all kinds of musicians, will be an Ida Beam Distinguished Visiting Professor in the University of Iowa School of Music, presenting a series of free, public events on Saturday, March 3.
The events include:
--A lecture/demonstration, “Music, Meaning, and the Body in Motion” at 10 a.m. in the University Capitol Centre (UCC) Recital Hall.
--The Un-Masterclass at 1:30 p.m. in the Music West Orchestra Rehearsal Room.
--A lecture/performance, “The Value of ‘Juicy Mistakes’ in Music, Learning, and Life,” at 7:30 p.m. in the UCC Recital Hall, followed by an informal reception.
Westney is a concert pianist, a faculty member at Texas Tech University, and the author of the book The Perfect Wrong Note: Learning to Trust Your Musical Self, a rethinking of performing, practicing, and musical learning.
His Un-Master Class is designed as an alternative to the traditional master-class. Starting with interactive group warm-ups, an environment is created that builds trust and breaks down barriers to artistic expression.
The class then focuses on prepared performances by selected participants -- helping performers communicate compellingly with the audience, reconnecting participants with their natural physical intuition about music, and assisting performers to reach new, significant levels of artistry.
His classes have been held internationally at conferences, music-teachers' meetings, universities, and music centers including the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, the Manhattan School of Music, the Central Conservatory in Beijing, the University for Music and the Performing Arts in Vienna, the Victorian College of the Arts in Melbourne, the Peabody Conservatory, the Holland Music Sessions, the Aspen School of Music, the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki, the Royal Danish Academy of Music in Copenhagen, and the Royal Conservatory in Toronto.

The School of Music is a unit of the Division of Performing Arts in the UI College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.
The Ida Cordelia Beam Distinguished Visiting Professorships Program was established in 1978-79 based on a bequest from the late Ida Beam of Vinton, who willed her family farm to the UI Foundation. Proceeds from the farm's sale enabled the UI to establish a fund that brings top scholars in a variety of fields to campus for lectures and discussions.
