Hancher to present Academy of St. Martin in the Fields Chamber Ensemble Oct. 2

Since its beginnings in 1958 as a conductor-less quartet in London's St. Martin-in-the-Fields church, the Academy of St. Martin in the Fields has grown into a legendary chamber orchestra. The University of Iowa's Hancher will present Academy of St. Martin in the Fields Chamber Ensemble at 3 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 2 in City High's Opstad Auditorium.

The Academy of St. Martin in the Fields Chamber Ensemble was created in 1967 to perform the larger chamber works -- from quintets to octets -- with players who customarily work together. The upcoming Hancher performance features eight musicians from the larger orchestra.

The program includes Johannes Brahms' Sextet No. 2 in G Major, Op. 36; Richard Strauss' String Sextet from "Capriccio," and Felix Mendelssohn's Octet in E-flat Major, Op. 20.

This is the fourth Academy of St. Martin in the Fields performance for Hancher. The ensemble last appeared in 2006 along with violinist Gil Shaham.

This performance is supported by Len and Marlene Hadley and the Hancher Partners.

Tickets are $40-45; college student, $10-40.50; senior citizen, $40-45; youth, $20-22.50.

The Hancher Box Office, located on the first floor of the south end of the Old Capitol Mall near the parking ramp, is open for phone (319-335-1160 or 800-HANCHER) or walk-up business from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. weekdays. Tickets may be ordered online at http://www.hancher.uiowa.edu. Any remaining tickets will be available for sale one hour before show time at Opstad Auditorium.
