Hubbard Street 2 to dance world premiere Hancher commission Sept. 22-23 in Space Place

Hancher will present Hubbard Street 2 on Thursday, September 22, and Friday, September 23, at 7:30 p.m. in Space Place Theater, located on the first floor of North Hall on the University of Iowa campus. It is the company's first Hancher performance.

Hubbard Street 2 is the preparatory company for Hubbard Street Dance Chicago, one of the leading contemporary dance companies in the U.S. Hubbard Street 2 provides professional training opportunities to young dancers, honing their technique and strengthening their creative voice. The company is well-known and respected, annually touring to venues around the world. Many Hubbard Street 2 dancers have gone on to dance with Hubbard Street's main company as well as other established companies both nationally and internationally.

Each year, Hubbard Street 2 holds the National Choreographic Competition, through which choreographers are chosen to set a new work on the company during a three-week residency in Chicago. Notable works from this program include creations from choreographers like Robert Battle, Aszure Barton and Brian Enos. This is the first time the residency has taken place outside of Chicago. This year's winner is Clébio Oliveira and Hubbard Street 2 will present the world premiere of his new work as part of these performances.

Hubbard Street 2 dancers are rehearsing alongside UI Department of Dance students as part of the residency. The UI dancers will perform the new work in their 2011 Dance Gala performance and will also include in it their Dancers in Company repertoire. In addition to the activities with the Department of Dance, Hubbard Street 2 director Taryn Kaschock Russell has been featured as a guest speaker in several Tippie College of Business John Pappajohn Entrepreneurial Center classes.

There will be a pre-performance discussion in Wild Bill's Coffee Shop on the third floor of North Hall on Thursday, September 22 at 6:30 p.m. with Hubbard Street Dance Chicago artistic director Glenn Edgerton, Russell, and Oliveira.

The performance is supported by the National Endowment for the Arts, the Hancher Partners and gifts to Hancher Circle through the UI Foundation.
