Media Advisory: UI Upward Bound Project partners with Columbus Junction for day of service

WHAT: The University of Iowa Upward Bound Project Day of Community Service with partner city, Columbus Junction, Iowa, to beautify the city through trash pick-up, mowing lawns, raking leaves, creating an installation project, and planting trees.

WHEN: Saturday, Oct. 15, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

WHERE: In various locations in Columbus Junction, Iowa, including the American Legion and Chautauqua Park

WHO: An estimated 55 high school Upward Bound Project students from Columbus Junction, Davenport, Muscatine, and West Liberty have signed up and will volunteer side-by-side with UI students from the UI College of Education Teacher Leader Center, UI Center for Diversity and Enrichment ambassadors, and others.

Nicole "Nikki" Rawson, the UI Upward Bound Project's counseling specialist, started searching around the Columbus Junction area for opportunities to make a difference. She was introduced to Mallory Smith of the Columbus Junction Community Development Center, and the two hit the ground running with ideas. Knowing that Upward Bound students enjoyed a previous cleanup day in Davenport, they came up with the idea to do something similar in Columbus Junction.

BACKGROUND: The Upward Bound Project serves 99 students in grades ninth through 12th from Columbus Junction, Davenport, Muscatine, and West Liberty Community Schools. The goal of the project is to prepare students for college. Students are eligible for the program if they will be the first in their family to attend college and/or are from a low-income background.
