Hancher to present American Beauty Project Dec. 9 in Riverside

The veteran musicians of the American Beauty Project re-imagine two of the Grateful Dead's most acclaimed albums, American Beauty and Workingman's Dead. The University of Iowa's Hancher will be present the American Beauty Project on Friday, Dec. 9, at 7 p.m. in the Riverside Casino & Golf Resort Event Center.

American Beauty and Workingman's Dead were both released in 1970 and both have been included in Rolling Stone's list of the 500 greatest albums of all time. The magazine also named Workingman's Dead as the best album of 1970. The albums contain such favorites as "Truckin'," "Sugar Magnolia," and "Uncle John's Band."

The American Beauty Project lineup includes jazz and blues vocalist Catherine Russell, whose Hancher-sponsored performance at the Mill on Dec. 8 is sold out. Russell has performed with David Bowie, Steely Dan, Jackson Brown, and many others.

Singer-songwriter and guitarist Jim Lauderdale, who is both an in-demand songwriter and a bluegrass star in his own right, is also part of the American Beauty Project. Folk group Ollabelle and guitarist David Mansfield, whose credits include membership in Bob Dylan's Rolling Thunder Revue and co-founding Bruce Hornsby and the Range, add their talents as well.

Tickets are $32-37; college student, $10-33.30; senior citizen, $28.80-33.30; youth, $16-18.50 available from the Hancher Box Office. The Hancher Box Office, located on the first floor of the south end of the Old Capitol Mall near the parking ramp, is open for phone (319-335-1160 or 800-HANCHER) or walk-up business from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. weekdays.
