Hearst Foundation grants will support student scholarships

The Hearst Foundation Inc. of San Francisco has made a $150,000 grant to the University of Iowa Foundation to support scholarships for UI students.

The grant will support the Advantage Iowa Scholarship, a program for students whose enrollment will contribute to a diverse learning environment at the UI.

"We are truly grateful to the Hearst Foundation for their support," says Mark Warner, UI assistant provost for enrollment management and director of financial aid. "These new dollars will offer timely and crucial private financial support for incoming students."

The grant will allow the UI to immediately increase the number of available awards -- ranging from $2,500 to full tuition -- to satisfy an increasing need for scholarship assistance.

"Many of the students who qualify for this program are first-generation college students from families who are financially challenged, and without this financial support, they wouldn't be able to enroll at the UI," Warner says. "Scholarships like this help students focus on their studies while minimizing their need to borrow."

The Hearst Foundation has been a longtime supporter of the UI. In 1997 the foundation established an endowed fund to support underrepresented students enrolling in the UI College of Nursing, and in 2002 it created an endowed fund in the UI School of Journalism and Mass Communication in the College of Arts and Sciences to support a visiting scholars program.

The Hearst Foundation is one of two independent private philanthropies established in 1945 by publisher and businessman William Randolph Hearst. Hearst's goal for the foundation was to advance education, health, social service, and culture across the nation.

The UI acknowledges the UI Foundation as the preferred channel for private contributions that benefit all areas of the university. For more information about the UI Foundation, visit its website at www.uifoundation.org.
