Bjorklund studied abroad with CIEE France in Rennes in fall 2010. Bjorklund writes, "Brittany's annual accordion festival, hosted in Rennes and surrounding villages, attracts vivid characters who embody the region's unique cultural tradition." UI celebrates International Education Week Nov. 11-17 International Education Week, a joint initiative of the U.S. Department of State and the U.S. Department of Education, will be celebrated at the University of Iowa Friday, Nov. 11 through Thursday, Nov. 17, offering several opportunities for the public to engage in international activities around campus. All events are free and open to the public unless otherwise noted.
Established by UI International Programs in 2010, the prestigious International Impact Award honors exceptional individuals in any field who have made sustained and deep contributions internationally or in the United States to promote global understanding.
Several other events and activities are included in the 2011 celebration: -- Friday, Nov. 11: A study abroad open house and the first annual Adopt-A-Language fair will take place from 3 to 4:30 p.m. in the University Capitol Centre (UCC). Visit the Office for Study Abroad in 1111 UCC to speak with study abroad advisers and peer assistants and learn about the numerous study abroad opportunities available to UI students. Stop by 1117 UCC to learn about critical language learning opportunities available through the Autonomous Language Learning Network service and Foreign Language Teaching Assistants program. -- Saturday, Nov. 12: Join the Organization for the Active Support of International Students (OASIS) for the Cultural Ball, the annual multi-cultural dance and fashion show, from 8:30 p.m. to midnight in the Iowa Memorial Union Second Floor Ballroom. Prizes will be awarded for best cultural costume and dance costume. Tickets are $3 and available at the IMU box office or at the door. -- Monday, Nov. 14: Returned Peace Corps volunteers will share their stories about teaching in developing countries and the UI Peace Corps representative will be on hand to answer questions during an informational session about teaching opportunities in the Peace Corps from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. in 1117 UCC. -- Tuesday, Nov. 15: Come celebrate the 40th anniversary of Friends of International Students and the former Office of International Education and Services, the forerunner to what is now International Programs. People can learn about the history of these two organizations and how they have changed since their establishment in 1971. The event takes place from 7 to 8:30 p.m. in 1117 UCC. -- Wednesday, Nov. 16: Get hands-on experience using calligraphy ink and brushes at the Confucius Institute's Chinese calligraphy workshop from 3 to 4:30 p.m. in 1117 UCC. Registration is required by Nov. 15 for this free event, and can be found at: http://international.uiowa.edu/confucius/events/default.asp. -- Thursday, Nov. 17: Study Abroad Showcase: "A Spectrum of Experiences" will highlight the diverse nature of international opportunities UI students have had all over the world. Study abroad returnees that lived in Africa, Asia, Europe, Latin America, and Oceania will be on hand to talk about their experiences, and study abroad advisers will be available to answer questions regarding the steps to studying abroad from 5 to 7 p.m. in the Burge Residence Hall main lobby.
Sponsors for UI International Education Week activities include International Programs, UITV, UI Pentacrest Museums, KRUI, Information Technology Services, UI Community Credit Union, OASIS, UI Student Government, the Office of International Students and Scholars, the Office for Study Abroad, and the Confucius Institute. The International Day of Human Rights, a nonpublic event to be held Tuesday, Nov. 15, is sponsored by The Stanley Foundation, UI College of Education, International Programs, UI Center for Human Rights and the Belin-Blank Center. International Education Week will be observed in over 100 countries worldwide from Nov. 14 to 18 this year. UI President Sally Mason will present the second International Impact Award at a WorldCanvass program from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 11, in the Senate Chamber of the Old Capitol. This year's recipient is Trudy Huskamp Peterson (photo, left), former acting archivist of the United States, founding executive director of the Open Society Archives, and director of archives and records management for the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees.
WorldCanvass host Joan Kjaer and invited guests will then discuss what it's like being "the other," someone whose color, tribe, political affiliation, religion, language, gender, or disability leaves him or her outside the majority and, often, without a voice in the world. The program will be recorded live by UITV for later distribution on Iowa cable television, Iowa Public Radio, the Public Radio Exchange, and as a free podcast through iTunes.
