EDITORS: This information originally was released Oct. 1, 2010. Participants still are welcome to participate in the study. In particular, the study seeks participants who have experienced onset of symptoms in the past two years.

UI study seeks participants with pelvic pain who have had symptoms in past two years

Men and women age 18 and older with pelvic pain or discomfort associated with frequent urination or urgency to urinate, as well as adult men and women with pelvic pain from interstitial cystitis or chronic prostatitis (chronic inflammation around the prostate) are invited to participate in a University of Iowa research study on the conditions.

The study aims to help reveal what causes the conditions with the goal of improving diagnosis and treatment. However, the study itself does not include treatment.

Both interstitial cystitis and chronic prostatitis can cause pain or discomfort in the pelvis or lower abdomen and the need to urinate more often than normal.

The study involves three visits to UI Hospitals and Clinics over one year. Each visit will last three to four hours. The visits include blood, urine and DNA tests, a physical exam, and, for women, a pelvic exam. Participants also will take a pain test.

In addition, participants will answer health questions online every few weeks. These questionnaires each take an average of 15 minutes.

Women who are pregnant are not eligible to participate in the study.

The study tests are provided at no cost. Compensation is available. The study is funded by the National Institutes of Health.
