UI engineering inducts Patricia Coleman into Distinguished Alumni Academy

The University of Iowa College of Engineering will induct Patricia Coleman, who earned her bachelor of science degree in civil engineering from the college in 1978, into its Distinguished Engineering Alumni Academy during the college's spring commencement Saturday, May 14.

In conjunction with her induction, Coleman will deliver the charge to the graduates at the College of Engineering Commencement ceremony at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 14, at the Marriott Hotel and Conference Center, Coralville, Iowa.

Coleman, a principal at the engineering design firm Thornton Tomasetti of Dallas, Texas, has more than 31 years of experience in structural design and project management of various building types. A licensed professional engineer in Florida, Iowa, Michigan and Texas, she has managed complex engineering projects, including Samsung Global Engineering headquarters, Seoul, South Korea; the Mary Kay corporate headquarters expansion; and the University of Miami Student Activity Center.

She has been involved with the ACE (Architecture, Construction and Engineering) Mentor Program of Dallas-Ft. Worth, and on the ACE board of directors since 2003. The program is a volunteer organization of architectural, construction and engineering professionals who mentor underprivileged high school students to pursue careers in their respective industries.

"Pat Coleman truly represents University of Iowa College of Engineering alumni at the highest level," Alec Scranton, interim dean, said. "We take great pride in helping educate 'the engineer … and something more.' Pat's successful professional career and her passion for giving back to her community and society provide a vivid testimonial to the education she received at Iowa. We are honored that she can share her words of encouragement with our graduates as they embark on their own careers."

The Distinguished Engineering Alumni Academy was created in 1996 to honor UI engineering alumni for their personal contribution toward engineering achievement, leadership, and service to the profession and to society. See: http://www.engineering.uiowa.edu/honor-wall/alumni-academy/index.php.
