Media Advisory: UI shares guidelines for spring commencement coverage

The University of Iowa will hold commencement ceremonies May 12-15 and June 3. Below are guidelines designed to assist members of the news media while respecting the needs of graduates and their families.

In all cases, doors to the facilities open to the public and media one hour before the start of commencement.

COMMENCEMENT SCHEDULE

*College of Pharmacy, 10 a.m. Thursday, May 12, Marriott Hotel & Conference Center in Coralville.

*Tippie School of Management (M.B.A. program), 10 a.m. Friday, May 13, Marriott Hotel & Conference Center in Coralville.

*College of Law, 1 p.m. Friday, May 13, Iowa Memorial Union Main Lounge.

*UI Roy J. and Lucille A. Carver College of Medicine, 6:30 p.m. Friday, May 13, Marriott Hotel & Conference Center in Coralville.

*College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, 9 a.m. Saturday, May 14, Carver-Hawkeye Arena.

*College of Engineering, 11 a.m. Saturday, May 14, Marriott Hotel & Conference Center in Coralville.

*College of Nursing, 2 p.m. Saturday, May 14, Iowa Memorial Union Main Lounge.

*Graduate College, 3 p.m. Saturday, May 14, Carver-Hawkeye Arena.

*Henry B. Tippie College of Business, 1 p.m. Sunday, May 15, Carver-Hawkeye Arena.

*College of Dentistry, 3 p.m. Friday, June 3, Marriott Hotel & Conference Center in Coralville.

PHOTO/VIDEO GUIDELINES FOR MARRIOTT, IMU

No flashes or lights may be used inside the Marriott or the IMU, and no cords or cables may lie on the floor. Please bring your batteries and be prepared to shoot from the shoulder.

Photographers may shoot from the back of the room. Please be in position before the start of the processional.

CARVER-HAWKEYE ARENA

--Parking is free in UI Commuter lots near Carver-Hawkeye Arena during commencement ceremonies. Due to ongoing arena renovations, those attending should enter through the south or west doors.

COLLEGE OF LIBERAL ARTS AND SCIENCES COMMENCEMENT

Doors open at 8 a.m. for the CLAS commencement, and photographers will be allowed on the arena floor until 8:30 a.m. when they must return to the designated media area.

GRADUATE COLLEGE COMMENCEMENT

Doors at Carver Hawkeye open at 2 p.m. Saturday, May 14, for the Graduate College commencement, and photographers will be allowed on the floor until five minutes before a 2:55 p.m. pre-processional. In other words, they must be off the floor no later than 2:50 p.m.

Full arena lighting will be used, so additional lights should not be necessary. Flashes and tripods are permitted. Cords may not lie on the floor in areas of any foot traffic.

Photos may be taken from the perimeter or from Press Row at any time during the ceremony.
Clean audio is available through the arena system.
