Media Advisory: UI to supply flood-threatened Louisiana with HESCO barriers

WHAT: Photo opportunity as a truck arrives to take University of Iowa HESCO flood barriers to communities in Louisiana that are at risk of flooding. The UI is providing 11,800 linear feet of HESCOs currently stored at locations on and near campus. The UI has a total of 15,000 linear feet of HESCO barriers in storage.

WHEN: About 1 p.m. today, Friday, May 6.

WHERE: Storage facility, 2802 Independence Road, Iowa City.

WHY: The UI is providing the barriers at the request of HESCO Bastion USA after the company was contacted by the Louisiana Governor’s Office. HESCO had some barriers in stock but not enough to fulfill the request, so the company contacted the UI, which has kept the barriers on hand since the June 2008 floods in Iowa City. UI officials say the risk of spring flooding in Iowa City is low, based on reservoir levels, rain projections and consultations with university, local and state officials.  In exchange for giving Louisiana the barriers, HESCO will replenish the UI’s stock with new barriers in two to three weeks and reimburse the university for any associated costs.

WHO: Dan Heater, director of Building & Landscape Services in UI Facilities Management, will be on hand to answer questions.
