Hancher presents recent Grammy winners the Carolina Chocolate Drops on April 7

Grammy Award-winning string band the Carolina Chocolate Drops will perform at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, April 7 at The Englert Theatre as part of Hancher's 2010-2011 season. The group collected the "Best Traditional Folk Album" Grammy at the awards ceremony in February for its acclaimed 2010 release, "Genuine Negro Jig."

Since the group's formation in 2005, the Carolina Chocolate Drops—Dom Flemons, Rhiannon Giddens, Adam Matta and Hubby Jenkins—have been injecting new energy into 1930s black string band music, as well as contemporary rhythm and blues. The group was the first black string band to appear on the Grande Ole Opry.

Along with more traditional string band classics like "John Henry," the Carolina Chocolate Drops also perform R&B hits like "Hit 'Em Up Style," bringing their style to contemporary music. Rolling Stone magazine describes the Carolina Chocolate Drops' style as "dirt-floor-dance electricity."

From 7 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 5, a discussion will be held at the African American Museum of Iowa in Cedar Rapids. Following the discussion, from 9 to 10 p.m., the Carolina Chocolate Drops will hold a fiddle and banjo workshop for Iowa Friends of Old-Time Music at the Hilltop Tavern in Iowa City. Both events are free and open to the public.

This performance and residency are supported in part by an award from the National Endowment for the Arts and by the Hancher Partners and gifts to Hancher Circle through the University of Iowa Foundation.

Tickets for the concert are $29/$25; college student $26.10/$10; senior citizen $26.10/22.50; youth $14.50/$12.50 from the Hancher Box Office. Remaining seats are limited.

The Hancher Box Office, located on the first floor of the south end of the Old Capitol Town Center near the parking ramp, is open for phone (319-335-1160 or 800-HANCHER) or walk-up business from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. weekdays. Tickets may be ordered online at http://www.hancher.uiowa.edu/. Any remaining tickets will be available for sale one hour before show time at The Englert Theatre.
