UI's Carter honored by American College of Clinical Pharmacy
Barry Carter, Pharm.D., University of Iowa professor of pharmacy practice and science, was selected by the American College of Clinical Pharmacy (ACCP) to receive the 2011 Russell R. Miller Award for substantial contributions to the clinical pharmacy literature.
The award, named for the founding editor of Pharmacotherapy, the journal of the ACCP, will be presented at the group's annual meeting Oct. 16 in Pittsburgh.
Carter holds the Patrick E. Keefe Professorship in Pharmacy and has a joint appointment in family medicine in the UI Carver College of Medicine. He has gained national attention for developing models for improved collaboration between pharmacists and physicians in treating high blood pressure. His research has shown this team approach improves treatment outcomes for high blood pressure and could be applied to other chronic conditions, which might play a role in controlling health care costs.
Carter earned a bachelor's degree in pharmacy from the UI in 1978 and completed a postdoctoral fellowship at the UI in 1981. He was on the UI College of Pharmacy faculty from 1981-88 and then rejoined the UI in 2000.
