Community seminar on women's heart health Feb. 3

Experts from the University of Iowa Heart and Vascular Center will present "Women and Heart Disease‚ It's Just a Matter of Time" from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 3, in the East Room (Elevator F, Level 8) at UI Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City. The event is free and open to the public; pre-registration is encouraged.

Elaine Demetroulis, M.D., a specialist in interventional cardiology, and Ellen Gordon, M.D., an expert cardiologist, will present an overview of women's heart health.

Discussion will include what women can do to protect themselves now, what women need to know about prevention, and an overview of wrist catheterization, a newer, lower-risk approach for women who need a heart catheterization. The seminar will also include a tour of a cath lab and interactive demonstrations on heart-healthy food preparation and exercising.

Reimringer reads from 'Vestments' Feb. 10 on Writing University

John Reimringer will read from "Vestments," his new novel, at 7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 10,. on the University of Iowa's Writing University website, http://www.writinguniversity.org. The stream will originate in a free public reading in Prairie Lights Books.

The novel, which attracted a starred review from Publishers Weekly, tells the story of a wayward but devout young Minnesota priest, haunted by his heritage and a violent upbringing, who struggles the reconcile his religious faith with yearnings of the flesh, including sports, drink and women.

Reimringer, a former employee of the UI law library, has published stories in the Carolina Quarterly, the Colorado Review, Louisiana Literature and Gulf Stream Magazine. The recipient of two Minnesota State Arts Board Fellowships and a residency at the Anderson Center for Interdisciplinary Studies, he has been a Susannah McCorkle Scholar at the Sewanee Writers’ Conference and a Loft-McKnight Fellow.
