Former Michigan law admissions head Shields to discuss diversity
Dennis Shields, a University of Iowa College of Law graduate and former dean of admissions at the University of Michigan law school, will discuss the challenges of diversity in higher education when he delivers the law school’s Human Rights Week keynote address.
Shields will speak at 3 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 18 in the Boyd Law Building. Admission is free.
As head of Michigan’s law school admissions office, Shields helped to develop its admission policy that incorporated an applicant’s race. The university was sued for the policy—with Shields named as a defendant—but it was eventually upheld by the United States Supreme Court in the case Grutter v. Bollinger.
Shields, a 1982 law school graduate, is now chancellor of the University of Wisconsin-Platteville.
