Hancher to present Ladysmith Black Mambazo on Feb. 18 at Riverside Casino & Golf Resort

Grammy Award-winning vocal ensemble Ladysmith Black Mambazo will perform Friday, Feb. 18 at 7:30 p.m. at Riverside Casino & Golf Resort’s Event Center in Riverside as a part of Hancher’s 2010-2011 season.

Since its genesis in the early 1960s, Ladysmith Black Mambazo has become one of the most recognized names in music. The native South African singers’ culturally rich repertoire has been influencing audiences since Ladysmith Black Mambazo first appeared, but it wasn’t until the group’s 1986 collaboration with Paul Simon on his album "Graceland" that the musicians really reached their mainstream audiences.

Ladysmith Black Mambazo hit U.S. audiences hard in 1988 when the members won a Grammy for Best Traditional Folk Album for their 1987 release "Shaka Zulu". This would be the first of three wins and 15 nominations for the musicians over the span of their still-strong career.

The singers have released a plethora of albums over their career and continue to create and record new music. Just last month the group released "Songs From a Zulu Farm," a part of larger trilogy titled Our "South African Story," which chronicles the musicians’ lives in South Africa.

The event is supported by the Hancher Partners and gifts to Hancher Circle through the University of Iowa Foundation.

Hancher is providing a bus to transport audience members to the performance. Students can ride for $5 and non-students for $10; seating is limited. Details are available from the Hancher Box Office.

Tickets for the concert are $42/$37; college student $10; senior citizen $37.80/$33.30; youth $21/$18.50 from the Hancher Box Office.

The Hancher Box Office, located on the first floor of the south end of the Old Capitol Town Center near the parking ramp, is open for phone (319-335-1160 or 800-HANCHER) or walk-up business from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. weekdays. Tickets may be ordered online at http://www.hancher.uiowa.edu/. Any remaining tickets will be available for sale one hour before show time at Riverside Casino & Golf Resort.
