UI students, honorary doctorates recognized at spring commencement ceremonies
An estimated 4,855 University of Iowa graduates and two honorary doctorate degree recipients will be recognized during spring 2011 commencement ceremonies.
Former Iowa Rep. Richard Myers will receive an honorary doctorate during the UI College of Liberal Arts and Sciences commencement ceremony Saturday, May 14, and UI benefactor and alumnus Jerre Stead will receive an honorary doctorate at the Tippie College of Business commencement ceremony Sunday, May 15.

Thursday, May 12:
--UI College of Pharmacy, 10 a.m., Marriott Hotel and Convention Center, Coralville. Number of degrees conferred, 107. Degrees will be conferred by UI President Sally Mason and Robert Downer, member of the Board of Regents, State of Iowa. The speaker will be benefactor and alumnus Patrick Keefe, former executive vice president and chief operating officer of Omnicare, Inc., a Fortune 500 company and leading provider of pharmaceutical care for the elderly.
Friday, May 13:
--UI School of Management (MBA program) Tippie College of Business, 10 a.m., Marriott Hotel and Convention Center in Coralville. Number of degrees conferred, 199. Degrees will be conferred by Mason. The speaker will be Thomas L. Aller, senior vice president – Energy Resource Development, Alliant Energy and president, Interstate Power and Light Co., an Alliant Energy Company.
--UI College of Law, 1 p.m., Iowa Memorial Union Main Lounge. Number of degrees conferred, 183. Degrees will be conferred by Mason and Downer. The speaker will be David Baker, former justice of the Iowa Supreme Court, and the student speaker will be John Lande, a College of Law graduate from Iowa City.
-- UI Carver College of Medicine, 6:30 p.m., Marriott Hotel and Convention Center in Coralville. Number of degrees conferred, 200. Degrees will be conferred by UI Interim Executive Vice President and Provost P. Barry Butler and Downer. The speaker will be Christopher Okiishi, M.D., a UI alumnus and former Carver College of Medicine faculty member.
Saturday, May 14:
--College of Liberal Arts and Sciences (CLAS), 9 a.m., Carver-Hawkeye Arena. Number of degrees conferred, 2,247, including 120 students who are obtaining their undergraduate certification in teacher education from the UI College of Education. Degrees will be conferred by Mason. The faculty speaker will be Brooks Landon, the UI's new Schmidt Chair and director of the General Education Literature Program in the English Department of CLAS. The student speaker will be Kristen Olney of Clinton, Iowa, who will receive a Bachelor of Science in biology, neurobiology track. Board of Regents, State of Iowa President Pro-Tem Jack Evans will address the graduates briefly.
--UI College of Engineering, 11 a.m. Marriott Hotel and Conference Center in Coralville. Number of degrees conferred: 222. Degrees will be conferred by Butler. The speaker will be engineering alumna Patricia Coleman, a principal at Thornton Tomasetti in Dallas, Texas, who also will be inducted into the college's Distinguished Engineering Alumni Academy at the ceremony.
--UI College of Nursing, 2 p.m., Iowa Memorial Union Main Lounge. Number of degrees conferred: 178. Degrees will be conferred by Butler. Speakers will include two UI nursing graduating students -- Jessica Spier of Hartley, Iowa, and Dean Vantiger of Yarmouth, Iowa.
--UI Graduate College, 3 p.m., Carver-Hawkeye Arena. Number of degrees conferred, 877. Mason will confer degrees and speak to the graduates.
Sunday, May 15
--UI Tippie College of Business, 1 p.m., Carver-Hawkeye Arena. Number of degrees conferred: 568. Degrees will be conferred by Mason. Stead will be the speaker.
Friday, June 3:
--UI College of Dentistry, Marriott Hotel and Conference Center, Coralville, 3 p.m. Number of degrees conferred: 74. Degrees will be conferred by Mason. Students speakers will be Kevin Dow from Bettendorf, Iowa, and Ryan Walsh from Sioux City, Iowa, who are co-presidents of the senior dental class.
