University Theatres Mainstage presents Tony-winning musical 'Urinetown'

University Theatres Mainstage will present the Tony Award-winning "Urinetown: The Musical," the Broadway comedy hit with an eyebrow-raising name, at 8 p.m., April 15, 16 and 21-23, and at 2 p.m. Sundays, April 17 and 24.

The musical, with score and lyrics by Mark Hollmann, and book and lyrics by Greg Kotis (the two won Tony Awards for best book and best score), is a social satire/parody filled with greed, corruption, love and revolution in a time when water is worth its weight in gold.

After a severe water shortage leads to a government-enforced ban on private toilets, the citizens are required to relieve themselves in facilities controlled by a single malevolent company, the money-grubbing Urine Good Company -- until a young hero decides he has had enough, plans a revolution and falls in love with the amply-endowed daughter of the evil company president along the way.

After its start at the New York Fringe Festival and an off-Broadway production, the show ran for nearly a thousand performances on Broadway between 2001 and 2004. A national tour also ran for three years.

The UI production -- featuring UI student and faculty cast and crew -- is directed and choreographed by Department of Theatre Arts faculty member John Clarence Cameron, with music direction by School of Music graduate student Michael Schnack.

Other artistic contributors to the "Urinetown" production include lighting designer Bryon Winn; set designer Amanda Helland; costume designer Mia Khayat; sound designers Jeff Crone and Lindsay Wolf; and dramaturg Christopher Okiishi.

Tickets for the performances are $20 general admission, $15 for senior citizens, $10 for youth, $5 UI student (with valid UI ID) from the Hancher Box Office.

The Hancher Box Office in the Old Capitol Town Centre, open for phone (319-335-1160 or 800-HANCHER) or walk-up business from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. weekdays. Tickets may be ordered online at http://www.hancher.uiowa.edu. Any remaining tickets will be available for sale one hour before show time at the University of Iowa Theatre Building.

This production includes material that may be inappropriate for younger audiences. Contact the department at 319-335-2700 for additional information.
