Hancher presents blues legend Taj Mahal & Trio Sept. 24 at Riverside Casino

With a career that spans more than four decades, Taj Mahal is one of the most influential American blues and roots artists of the past half-century. The University of Iowa’s Hancher will present Taj Mahal & the Trio at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 24 at the Riverside Casino & Golf Resort’s Event Center.

Taj Mahal has brought a world of influence to the American blues, fusing musical traditions from the Mississippi Delta and the Appalachian backwoods with those of West Africa, the Caribbean, Latin America, Europe, and the Hawaiian Islands. Equally adept with the guitar, keyboard, banjo, and harmonica, the two-time Grammy Award winner will lead his acoustic trio in a program to be announced from the stage.

His latest CD, “Maestro: Celebrating 40 Years,” celebrates the 40th anniversary of his rich and varied recording career. Nominated for a Grammy in 2008, the disc features collaborations with both veteran musicians and newcomers, including Ben Harper, Jack Johnson, Angelique Kidjo, Los Lobos, Ziggy Marley and others.

The event is supported by the Hancher partners and gifts to Hancher Circle through the University of Iowa Foundation.
