Sept. 7, 2010

UI police report attempted sexual assault

University of Iowa Department of Public Safety reports an attempted sexual assault that occurred at approximately 2 p.m. Saturday Sept. 4.

A woman reported that on Saturday, Sept. 4, 2010, at approximately 2 p.m. after the UI football game with Eastern Illinois University, that she crossed the Finkbine Golf Course driving range to return to her parked car. She passed two males, and after she walked past them, she heard footsteps behind her. She was pushed down to the ground by one of them, and attempts were made to remove her clothing. She fought off the attacker and was able to run to her car and escape. The victim did not report any physical injuries.

The principle suspect was described as a short, college-age white male, stocky with a dark beard. He was wearing a black fleece jacket, cargo shorts and a white athletic hat. The other male was described as a blonde college-age white male, wearing cargo shorts, and was thinner and taller than the other one.

The UI Police recommend people walk in groups as much as possible and report crime immediately by calling 911. Those who have any information regarding this crime should call 319-335-5022 or Iowa City CrimeStoppers at 319-358-TIPS. Callers to CrimeStoppers with information leading to a conviction may be eligible for a reward. Confidential victim advocacy services are available for all community members through the Rape Victim Advocacy Program, 24 hour Crisis line, 319-335-6000.

This information is being released in accordance with the federal Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act. The Clery Act requires all colleges and universities that participate in federal financial aid programs to keep and disclose information about crime on and near their respective campuses, including timely warnings of crimes that may represent a threat to the safety of students or employees.
