UI Department of Dance presents Dance Gala 2010 Oct. 28 through Nov. 7

The University of Iowa Department of Dance will present the 2010 Dance Gala -- its major annual production -- at 8 p.m. Oct. 28-30 and Nov. 4-6, and at 2 p.m. Oct. 31 and Nov. 7, in the Space Place Theatre of the UI's North Hall. The department is celebrating the 35th anniversary of the Dance Gala, and has dedicated the production to David Nelson, the founding director of the UI Division of Performing Arts, who recently passed away.

The program will feature choreography by dance faculty members Deanna Carter, Charlotte Adams, Eloy Barragan, Jennifer Kayle and Armando Duarte.

Carter's ballet, "Into Autumn," set to music by Vivaldi, was premiered on tour by Ballet West II, which performed in Eastern Iowa in September through the sponsorship of Hancher.

Carter says, "This work represented the Department of Dance and gave our students the opportunity to work alongside that professional company, exposing audiences in Fairfield, Kalona and Muscatine to high quality dance while giving our students expanded performance opportunities.

Adams' "Root Bound" was created in collaboration with her dancers, using music ranging from a Chopin waltz to a traditional Hungarian folk song.

"Los Caminantes" (Walkers) was choreographed by Barragán, one of only three choreographers commissioned to celebrate the 2010 Mexican Centennial and Bicentennial in Mexico City's Palace of Fine Arts this fall.

Kayle's "The Only Constant" was choreographed to an original score by Christopher Shortway, a UI graduate fellow in the Division of Performing Arts.

Duarte will present excepts from "De Zunido e Rosas," set to a collage of Brazilian composers, and inspired by the “Literatura de Cordel” (Pamphlet Literature or Stories of a String), one of the most important expressions of traditional Brazilian northeastern popular culture.
