Homecoming competition winners named

As part of the University of Iowa's Homecoming Week Sept. 25 to Oct. 2, several UI students and organizations won several competitions designed to get everyone in a "Hawkeye State of Mind."

The competitions ranged from the traditional Homecoming king and queen selections to an overall competition where fraternities, sororities and student organizations earned points for the number of members participating in homecoming week activities.

John Rigby and Erica Hayes, both seniors from Marion, Iowa were named king and queen in a ceremony following the annual Homecoming Parade on Oct. 1.

Seniors in the Homecoming court included Lindsey Mikkelsen of Omaha, Neb.; Mark Rigby of Marion; Lisa Gudenkauf of Cedar Rapids; Zane Umsted of West Bend; Lisa Gillette of Ottawa, Ill.; Greg Pelc of Oelwein; Katie McDonnell of Davenport; Thomas Speake of Hampton; Kolie Eko of Coralville and Dave DeMik of Tinley Park, Ill.   

Overall winners in Homecoming participation competition among fraternities and sororities were:
--1st, Chi Omega, Phi Delta Theta, Tau Kappa Epsilon.
--2nd, Alpha Chi Omega, Alpha Epsilon Phi, Lambda Chi Alpha.
--3rd, Sigma Nu, Pi Beta Phi.

Winners of the Homecoming participation competition among student organizations were:
--1st, UI College of Pharmacy.
--2nd, UI College of Nursing.
--3rd, UI Breakers.

Winners of Iowa Shout held on Thursday, Sept. 29 were:
--1st, Chi Omega, Phi Delta Theta, Tau Kappa Epsilon.
--2nd, Pi Kappa Phi, Gamma Phi Beta.
--3rd, Alpha Chi Omega, Alpha Epsilon Phi, and Lambda Chi Alpha.

Parade winners in four categories included:
--The University of Iowa Community Credit Union, community.
--UI College of Pharmacy, student organizations.
--Daum, residence hall.
--Alpha Chi Omega, Alpha Epsilon Phi, and Lambda Chi Alpha, fraternity and sorority.
