Hancher presents rising jazz star Esperanza Spalding Dec. 9 at Englert Theatre
The University of Iowa’s Hancher will present rising jazz star Esperanza Spalding, the young bassist, vocalist and composer celebrated for her instrumental prowess, multi-lingual voice, and ability to blend musical influences from funk to fusion, Brazilian samba to rhythm and blues. The performance will take place at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 9 at the Englert Theatre in downtown Iowa City. Spalding's program will be announced from the stage.
When her 2008, self-titled, major-label debut topped Billboard’s Contemporary Jazz chart soon after its release and remained there for more than 70 weeks, Spalding snagged national attention from jazz critics and mainstream music fans alike for her dexterous bass technique and smooth, captivating vocals in English, Spanish and Portuguese.
She won both the JazzWeek Award for Record of the Year and the Jazz Journalists Association’s Jazz Award for Up-and-Coming Artist of the Year in 2009. She was also named one of Oprah’s “Ten Women on the Rise” in 2010 and was picked by President Obama to play at his Nobel Peace Prize ceremony.
Spalding recently released her sophomore album, the intimate "Chamber Music Society," which adds new shades and layers to her creative voice by combining her acoustic jazz trio with string arrangements. Her performance in Iowa City will feature material from the project.
The event is supported by the Hancher partners and gifts to Hancher Circle through the University of Iowa Foundation.
