Collotons donate $100,000 to UI College of Public Health

A gift of $100,000 for the University of Iowa College of Public Health from John W. and Mary Ann Colloton of Coralville, Iowa, will help to advance the college and position it for further growth and development.

At the request of the Collotons, the funds are to be used at the discretion of College of Public Health Dean Sue Curry. The College of Public Health's ongoing $15 million capital campaign, Building Today for a Healthy Tomorrow, is focused on financing a new building that will be the college's first academic home, as well as providing funds for student and faculty support and other programmatic development.

The College of Public Health building is being constructed on the UI campus on a site formerly occupied by the UI International Center. The $47.7 million facility, scheduled for completion in fall 2011, will provide classrooms and gathering space for the more than 380 students enrolled in public health degree programs, as well as offices for faculty in the college's five academic departments and core administrative staff.

"As Director of University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics and Assistant to the University President for Statewide Health Services from 1971 to 1993, John Colloton provided visionary leadership in building one of the premier tertiary health care centers in the world," said Curry. "With this generous support for the College of Public Health, John and Mary Ann continue to be leaders in improving the health of Iowans."

The Collotons previously donated nearly $1.5 million to a broad array of UI colleges, departments and programs, including a separate $100,000 gift to the College of Public Health in 1999. Also in 1999, the John W. Colloton Chair in Health Management and Policy was established in the College of Public Health with a $2 million endowment contributed by colleagues and friends of the Collotons.

Both of the Collotons hold degrees from the UI, Mary Ann from the College of Nursing and John from the College of Public Health. John Colloton was selected as the recipient of a College of Public Health Outstanding Alumnus Award in 2005 and in 1999 was the recipient of a University of Iowa Distinguished Alumni Award for Achievement.
