MEDIA ADVISORY: UNL officials to discuss success in reducing binge drinking

WHAT: Members of a delegation from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln (UNL) and the city of Lincoln, Nebraska, will be on the University of Iowa campus Thursday, May 20, to meet with faculty, staff, students, community members and news media to share information about some of the successful strategies and best practices the city and university have employed to reduce binge drinking among UNL students.

WHEN: The media availability will take place from 12:30 to 1 p.m. Thursday, May 20. Media can access the room to set up equipment at noon that day. A multbox will be provided.

WHERE: The Penn State Room (Room 337) of the UI Iowa Memorial Union.

WHO: The Nebraska delegation is scheduled to include Linda Major, UNL
assistant vice chancellor for student affairs; Ian Newman, Ph.D., the Wesley
C. Meierhenry Distinguished Professor in Educational Psychology at UNL and
director of the Nebraska Prevention Center for Alcohol and other Drug Abuse;
and Capt. Joy Cita of the Lincoln Police Department. Representing the
University of Iowa will be Dr. Victoria Sharp, special assistant to the
provost for alcohol safety, and Sarah Hansen, director of assessment and
strategic initiatives in the Division of Student Services.

WHY: The Partnership for Alcohol Safety, which is sponsoring the visit, is looking to UNL and the city of Lincoln, Nebraska, as a model town-gown partnership that has successfully reduced harmful drinking among college students.
