UI undergraduate students to present research at March 27 celebration

More than 80 University of Iowa undergraduate students will present their research at the Iowa Center for Research by Undergraduates (ICRU) Sixth Annual Spring Undergraduate Research Festival from 9:30 to 11 a.m. Saturday, March 27 in the Main Lounge of the Iowa Memorial Union. This research event collaborates with the annual Jakobsen Graduate Conference later in the afternoon. The event is free and open to the public.

UI Interim Vice President for Research Jordan Cohen will present the Vice President for Research's 2010 Excellence in Undergraduate Research Awards, and students will present the ICRU Distinguished Mentor Awards at 11:15 a.m. Students will present posters from the arts, humanities, social sciences, mathematics, engineering and the natural sciences.

"These presentations demonstrate the breadth of scholarly work pursued collaboratively by faculty, staff and students at the university, said Bob Kirby, ICRU director.

Students working in the UI College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, the Carver College of Medicine, the College of Engineering, the College of Pharmacy, the College of Education, Tippie College of Business and the College of Nursing will present their research at the festival.

Ankeny: Tom Salter is an integrative physiology major working with mentor Harold Stauss in the integrative physiology department in the UI College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. Salter's poster is entitled "A novel technique to study the time course of morphological and functional vascular responses to hypertension in conscious rats."

Bellevue: Lindsey Knake is an engineering major working with mentors Timothy Marler and Karim Abdel-Malek in the chemical and environmental engineering department in the UI College of Engineering. Knake's poster is entitled "New Capabilities for Vision-based Posture Prediction."

Boone: Brandon Goodman is a mechanical engineering major working with mentor James Buchholz in the mechanical engineering department in the UI College of Engineering. Goodman's poster is entitled "Experimental Investigation of Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome (HLHS)."

Breda: Annie Kock is a chemical and biochemical engineering major working with mentor Jennifer Fiegel in the chemical and biochemical engineering and pharmacy department in the UI College of Engineering and the Carver College of Medicine. Cedar Falls: Adam Schwertner is a biomedical engineering major working with mentor Ryan Flynn in the radiation oncology department in the UI Carver College of Medicine. Schwertner's poster is entitled "Reducing excess imaging dose to cancer patients receiving radiotherapy."

Cedar Rapids: Lee Carroll is a biology and pre-medicine major working with mentor Jeff Meier in the internal medicine department in the UI Carver College of Medicine. Carroll's poster is entitled "Analysis of HCMV URL 128 Expression."
