University of Iowa Youth Ballet to offer three summer workshops
University of Iowa Youth Ballet, a community outreach program of the UI Department of Dance, will offer three weeklong dance workshops for children and youth this summer. The workshops are also known as "intensives" because students practice up to six hours a day for the week, depending on their level of experience.
The workshops to be offered are:
-- Ballet Intensive Full-Day Camp for ages 10-16, June 14-18, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. This camp is for intermediate level students and will cover ballet, variations, character, body conditioning, hip-hop and jazz. The cost is $150.
-- Coppelia Camp for ages 7-9; June 21-25, 1 to 3:30 p.m. This camp is for students at the beginner and low intermediate levels and will cover ballet, ballet history and costume design. Cost is $75.
-- Nutcracker Camp for ages 5-6, June 28-July 2, 9 to 11:30 a.m. A class for beginners, this will cover ballet, creative movement and crafts. Cost is $75.
The workshops are held in Halsey Hall, near the corner of Jefferson and Madison streets on the UI campus.
Kathryn Smith is the director of the program. She holds a bachelor's degree in dance performance from the University of Missouri-Kansas City, where she also danced with the Kansas City Ballet Company. She also holds a master's degree in dance from the UI and has taught for more than 30 years.
