Hancher presents Broadway smash 'Avenue Q' at March 26-28

The University of Iowa's Hancher is presenting "Avenue Q," the hit Broadway musical about real life in New York City. The musical's story is told by a cast of people and puppets through an irreverent, Tony Award-winning book and score. "Avenue Q" also won the Tony for Best Musical.

The musical will be presented at the U.S. Cellular Center in Cedar Rapids. The show opens at 7:30 p.m. Friday, March 26. There are also shows at 2 and 7:30 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday, March 27 and 28.

The performances mark the first time Hancher has presented a Broadway show since flooding closed the auditorium in 2008.

"Avenue Q" tells the story of Princeton, a bright-eyed college graduate who moves to New York City with big dreams and a tiny bank account. The only apartment he can afford is way out on Avenue Q, where everyone is looking for the same things he is: a decent job, a stable relationship and a "purpose." Eventually, Princeton learns to embrace the ups and downs of city life and realizes that "the real world" isn't so bad after all.

The New York Times hailed "Avenue Q" as "a breakthrough musical of a very different stripe. Savvy, sassy and delicious!" Entertainment Weekly claimed it was "one of the funniest shows you're ever likely to see!"

The show includes adult language and situations and is not appropriate for children.

"Avenue Q" features music and lyrics by Robert Lopez and Jeff Marx, book by Jeff Whitty, based on an original concept by Robert Lopez and Jeff Marx; and is directed by Jason Moore; puppet design by Rick Lyon, orchestrations by Stephen Oremus, choreography by Ken Roberson, scenic design by Anna Louizos, costume design by Mirena Rada, lighting design by Howell Binkley, and sound design by Lew Mead; associate director is Evan Ensign and music supervisor is Andrew Graham. "Avenue Q" is produced by Work Light Productions.

The performances are supported by the Hancher partners and gifts to Hancher Circle through the University of Iowa Foundation. The show is also sponsored by the Paramount Theatre.

Tickets for "Avenue Q" are $57/50; college students, $35. Tickets are available via Ticketmaster at http://www.ticketmaster.com/ or by calling 800-745-3000. Both the U.S. Cellular Center in Cedar Rapids and IMU Box Office on the UI campus are Ticketmaster locations.
