MEDIA ADVISORY: Students volunteer at Mann Elementary to inspire young writers

WHAT: Five University of Iowa undergraduate students from earthwords, the original undergraduate literary magazine since 1980 at the UI, are finishing their second year of volunteering at Horace Mann Elementary in Iowa City.

The magazine is a student organization in the UI Office of Residence Life. earthwords staff members began the creative after-school writing program last year in the hopes of fostering a literary environment for young writers. The four-week program, which culminates next Friday, March 12, involves writing games, poetry and fiction exercises and the creation of a small literary magazine working with 10 to 12 Mann Elementary students in grades three through five. The community connection has been a positive experience for earthwords editors, and those volunteering hope the program encourages creative thinking while also having a little fun, according to UI student Kathryn Duffy, who also serves as earthwords editor-in-chief.
