UI offers new off-campus housing website

The University of Iowa has launched a new and improved website to simplify the off-campus housing search for students, parents, faculty and staff, and area property owners and managers. The website, http://offcampushousing.uiowa.edu/, includes properties for rent and sale, as well as message boards to find roommates, buy and sell furniture, and other features.

The UI Off Campus Housing Service, operated by the Campus Information Center in the Iowa Memorial Union, has provided housing listings to students since 1976; the service has been Web-based since 2006. But in response to requests for enhanced information about properties and roommate matching resources, the housing service partnered with Off Campus Partners in Charlottesville, Va. to launch the new and improved website.

The new site offers a user-friendly, searchable database for students, parents, faculty and staff to find housing in the Iowa City area. It includes photographs and floor plans; maps showing the housing location's proximity to the UI campus; direct links to a property owner's or manager's e-mail, website and application or lease; as well as unlimited text descriptions and lists of amenities.

Other features include message boards for roommate matching, study abroad students interested in splitting leases and buy/sell postings for furniture and other items. The new service also has a resource center with information on tenant/ landlord issues, leases, security deposits, alcohol safety, student credit and money management, hosting responsible parties, community resources, new faculty/staff resources and more.

While most UI students sign leases Aug. 1 for off-campus housing, there are others -- particularly international students -- who still are seeking housing over the summer, said Penny Kaelber, director of the Campus Information Center. More than 24,000 UI students (15,040 undergraduates and 9,143 graduate students) live off campus.

The service will be free for UI students, parents, and new faculty/staff, but property managers and owners will pay a fee to post listings. To list a property for rent or sale on the site, contact Emmaline Smith at Off Campus Partners, 877-895-1234, or emmaline@offcampuspartners.com.

Off Campus Partners works with 38 other colleges and universities across the United States to provide off-campus housing listings to students and campus communities.
