MEDIA ADVISORY: Campus Recreational and Wellness Center media tour July 30

WHAT: Media tour of new University of Iowa Campus Recreation and Wellness Center

WHEN: 1-2:30 p.m. Friday, July 30

WHERE: Campus Recreation and Wellness Center, southwest corner of Burlington and Madison streets, Iowa City. Parking is available one block southeast; media should meet at the northeast entrance of the CRWC.

WHY: This is an opportunity for media to get a preview of the CWRC before it officially opens Monday, Aug. 2.

The $70 million, 215,000-square-foot center provides fitness and aquatic equipment and facilities for students and others, and includes offices for UI Wellness and Health Iowa, Recreational Services and the UI men's and women's swimming and diving teams.

CWRC highlights include a 52.5-foot climbing wall, a 20,042-square-foot fitness area with equipment on three levels, competition and dive pools, a leisure swimming pool and spa, two gymnasiums, a 1/9-mile indoor track, multi-activity court, three activity rooms, steam and sauna rooms, café, and locker rooms. Artwork includes a bronze relief of a swimmer and two floor tile mosaics.

Memberships and lockers go on sale Aug. 2. The center dedication is scheduled for 2-6 p.m. Friday Aug. 27, with the formal program starting at 3:30 p.m.

WHO: Several UI staff members will be available to answer questions during the tour. Harry Ostrander, director of Recreational Services, will give the tour. Also available for questions will be Michelle Harder, senior associate director of Recreational Services, who oversees the CWRC. Phil Julson, associate director of Recreational Services and aquatics director, can answer questions about the pools. Pat Kutcher, associate director of Recreational Services, oversees fitness programs and can answer questions about the fitness areas and equipment. Dave Patton, assistant director of Recreational Services, can talk about the climbing wall. Megan Moeller, UI Wellness, will speak on behalf of the Wellness Services area. Marc Long, head swimming and diving coach, will talk about the benefits of the CRWC for UI student athletes. And Wendy Moorehead, Facilities Management, can speak about the building and construction process.
