UPDATE: The Winard Harper coaching session with UI jazz ensembles that was originally announced for Wednesday, Feb. 10, at 8 p.m. at The Wedge, will be held at 8 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 9. The correction has been noted in the release.

Hancher presents the jazz artists of the Winard Harper Sextet Feb. 12

Winard Harper is a master percussionist, equally comfortable behind the drum kit and playing the West African mallet instrument known as the balafon. His sextet features fierce young talent that winningly delivers the textured and layered sound that is Harper's trademark. The University of Iowa's Hancher will present the Winard Harper Sextet at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 12. The performance will be held in City High School's Opstad Auditorium.

Harper's résumé includes stints with jazz greats Dr. Billy Taylor, Dexter Gordon, Betty Carter, Pharaoh Sanders and others, as well as two decades as a leader. As a percussionist, he is much more than a guy who pounds out the beat. According to All About Jazz, "He is so mind-bogglingly dexterous...as to be truly awe-inspiring."

While in the community, Harper and the members of his sextet will participate in several days of residency activities under Hancher's auspices. Harper will coach high school jazz bands, will speak in UI classes and make a presentation to teachers in the Iowa City Community School District.

The public is invited to two of the residency events. Harper will participate in a coaching session with UI jazz ensembles on Tuesday, Feb. 9, at 8 p.m. at The Wedge, which is located on the Iowa City Pedestrian Mall. On Thursday, Feb. 11, at 8 p.m., Harper and his sextet will participate in a jam session with UI jazz studies students at The Mill in Iowa City.

The Hancher partners and gifts to Hancher Circle through the University of Iowa Foundation support the performance and residency.

Tickets for the Feb. 12 performance are $25/20; UI student $22.50/10; senior citizen $22.50/18; youth $17.50/14 from the Hancher Box Office.

The Hancher Box Office, now located on the first floor of the south end of the Old Capitol Town Center near the parking ramp, is open for phone 319-335-1160 or 800-HANCHER or walk-up business from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. weekdays. Tickets may be ordered online at http://www.hancher.uiowa.edu/. Any remaining tickets will be available for sale one hour before show time at City High School.
