Broadlawns, UI Hospitals and Clinics share records electronically

Leaders of the Broadlawns Medical Center in Des Moines, Iowa, and University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City, Iowa, today jointly announced they are sharing information in the electronic medical records of IowaCare patients who are referred from Broadlawns to the UI, the state's only comprehensive academic medical center.

The agreement supports changes in the IowaCare program, enables the meaningful use of high level clinical data, and provides numerous benefits to patients.

"We are pleased that the electronic medical information capabilities of Broadlawns and UI Hospitals and Clinics have advanced to the point where it is possible to seamlessly share information," said Al White, senior vice president for business services at Broadlawns Medical Center. "This capability enables specialty providers at UI Hospitals and Clinics to know what we know about the patients we refer there so they can deliver the high-quality care we expect for our patients."

"One of the major challenges in health care is ensuring the timely transmission of accurate patient information from a referrer to the new care team," said Lee Carmen, associate vice president for information systems at UI Hospitals and Clinics. "Sharing information electronically makes caring for patients appropriately transferred from Broadlawns to UI Hospitals and Clinics more efficient and effective."

Carmen and White cited several benefits of electronic information sharing about referred patients, including the fact that the information will be up-to-date and make it easier to anticipate patients' specific needs.
