Media Advisory: UI students share holiday traditions from around the world

WHAT: Six University of Iowa international undergraduate, graduate and professional international students will give presentations on the holidays in their home countries to 7th-grade students through the International Classroom Journey (ICJ), an outreach program offered to K-12 schools through UI International Programs.

WHEN: Monday, Dec. 20, from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. with six different 45-minute presentations throughout the time period. Reporters and photographers who wish to cover this story need to check in at the front desk

WHERE: Classroom of 7th-grade social studies teacher Alisa Meggitt at North Central Junior High (NCJH), located at 180 E. Forevergreen Rd. in North Liberty

WHO: UI students Linh Bui from Vietnam will present from 8:30 to 9:13 a.m.; UI students Samangi Abeysinghe and Ashabha Lansakara of Sri Lanka will present from 10:04 to 10:47 a.m. and again from 10:51 to 11:35 a.m.; Berhan Gelan of Ethiopia will present from 1:01 to 1:44 p.m.; Zhilin Ding of China will present from 1:48 to 2:32 p.m.; and Ee Phie Tan of Malaysia will present from 2:36 to 3:20 p.m.

BACKGROUND: International students serve as volunteer cultural ambassadors in K-12 classrooms through ICJ. Students do everything from talking about the culture and politics of their home countries to sharing arts and music. Over the past four years, 400 students have visited 170 schools in eastern Iowa.
