Media Advisory: December commencement coverage guidelines

The University of Iowa will hold commencement ceremonies Friday and Saturday, Dec. 17 and 18. Arthur Neu, an attorney from Carroll, Iowa, with a long history of public service to the state, will receive an honorary doctorate at the undergraduate commencement ceremony, which begins at 9 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 18, at Carver-Hawkeye Arena.

The UI Graduate College ceremony will take place at 7 p.m. Friday, Dec. 17, at Carver-Hawkeye Arena.

The undergraduate ceremony at 9 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 18 at Carver-Hawkeye Arena is held for undergraduates from the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, Tippie College of Business, College of Nursing, University College and Carver College of Medicine.

The College of Engineering will hold its ceremony at noon Saturday, Dec. 18, at Macbride Hall Auditorium.

Below are guidelines designed to assist members of the news media while respecting the needs of graduates and their families.

--Doors open at 8 a.m. for the undergraduate commencement, and photographers will be allowed on the arena floor until five minutes before graduates begin the processional. (In other words, no later than 8:55 a.m.) Doors open at 6 p.m. for the Graduate College ceremony, and photographers will also be allowed on the arena floor until five minutes before graduates begin the processional, no later than 6:55 p.m.

--Full arena lighting will be used, so additional lights should not be necessary. Flashes and tripods are permitted. Cords may not lie on the floor in areas of any foot traffic.

--Photographers can take pictures from the top of the arena or from the aisles in the audience, but no one except students and commencement marshals will be allowed on the floor during the ceremony.

--Clean audio is available through the arena system.

UI commencement ceremonies will not be cancelled or re-scheduled if there is inclement weather.
