'Daily Show' correspondent Mandvi to speak Aug. 24 at Englert Theatre

mandviAasif Mandvi, correspondent for "The Daily Show with Jon Stewart," will speak about "The Real Story Behind the Fake News" for the third annual Cassandra S. Foens, M.D. Welcome Week lecture at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 24 in the Englert Theatre in downtown Iowa City.

In this speech, Mandvi will take the audience behind the scenes of the hit primetime news satire. He will show how the writers and correspondents analyze the best and worst of each day's news to bring hilarious insight into the world of politics and international relations.

As a "Daily Show" correspondent, Mandvi takes a skewering perspective on politics and foreign affairs. Known for his entertaining and insightful "on-location" reporting, Mandvi has a wide range of entertainment industry experience, having appeared in film and on television, and as an OBIE Award-winner for his one-man play, "Sakina's Restaurant." Most recently, he starred in the blockbuster hit "The Last Airbender," and this fall, he'll appear alongside Zach Galifianakis in "It's A Funny Kind of Story." Ismail Merchant cast Mandvi as the lead in the 2001 film "The Mystic Masseur" after seeing him perform "Sakina's Restaurant."

This event is free and open to the public, and is sponsored by the UI Lecture Committee. It is part of the UI's Welcome Week activities.
