UI Pentacrest Museums host Family Weekend April 24-25

The University of Iowa Pentacrest Museums will hold their annual Family Weekend on Saturday and Sunday, April 24 and 25. Over the weekend, both the Museum of Natural History and Old Capitol Museum will offer a variety of free, public programs for visitors of all ages.

The Museum of Natural History will host a variety of environmental-themed programs throughout the weekend including invasive- and endangered-species activities, decorating a reusable shopping bag to take home, Arbor Day games and activities, and a Pentacrest scavenger hunt.

On Saturday, ECO Iowa City will present green-home demonstrations at 1, 2, and 3 p.m. On Sunday, visitors may watch the documentary "Mad City Chickens" at 2 p.m. as part of the "Movies@MNH," Earth Month movie series.

The Old Capitol Museum will offer visitors the opportunity to make a special tin lantern similar to those used in the 1800s. Children can play games and make special toys like the "whimmy diddle" and "thumatrope," which were popular in the Victorian era. Visitors can also learn about Iowa City photographer Fred W. Kent and visit the current exhibit "The U of I Through the Lens of Fred W. Kent."

For more information contact the Old Capitol Museum at 319-335-0548 or the Museum of Natural History at 319-335-0606. For museum hours see the UI Museum of Natural History website and the Old Capitol Museum website
