University of Iowa News Release

April 15, 2010

NOTE: This is an amended release, which includes a new ranking for the UI College of Public Health - the biostatistics doctorate within Top Statistics Programs, ranked 25 compared to other public universities only and ranked 40 compared to both public and private universities. In statistics, graduate programs may be offered through a biostatistics or a statistics department. At the UI, a Ph.D. is offered through both the Department of Statistics and Actuarial Science in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences and also through the UI Department of Biostatistics in the UI College of Public Health, and each program is ranked separately.

This release presents the U.S.News rankings in two ways: comparing public and private universities together (as the magazine presents the rankings in "America's Best Graduate Schools 2011") and comparing the UI only to other public universities (derived by pulling out private universities and recalculating). This is intended to give readers a better idea of how the UI is ranked compared to other publicly funded peer institutions across the country.

U.S.News ranks 22 UI programs among top 10 in nation among public universities

U.S.News & World Report ranks 22 University of Iowa graduate programs and colleges among the 10 best in the country when compared to other public universities, with five UI programs continuing to rank in first place.

"America's Best Graduate Schools 2011" ranks as No. 1 as compared to public universities the speech-language pathology and audiology graduate programs, the physician assistant program and the nursing specialties of Nursing Service Administration and Gerontological/Geriatric. All five rankings are carried over from previous years.

Other UI graduate programs ranked highly when compared to other public universities -- a mix of new and carry-over rankings that won't all appear in the print guidebook -- are: Medicine Specialties-Internal Medicine and Women’s Health, both in the Carver College of Medicine, 8 (new rankings); Nursing Specialty-Nurse Practitioner: Pediatric (College of Nursing), 6 (carry-over ranking); Master of Fine Arts program in art and design, 7 (carry-over ranking); Fine Arts Specialty-Painting/Drawing, 7 (carry-over ranking); College of Law, 8 (new ranking); Clinical Psychology, doctorate (CLAS), 8 (carry-over ranking); Education Specialty-Higher Education Administration (College of Education), 8 (new ranking); Nursing, master's (College of Nursing), 9 (carry-over ranking); College of Medicine-Primary Care (Carver College of Medicine), 9 (new ranking); Education Specialty-Student Counseling and Personnel Services (College of Education), 10 (new ranking); and Engineering Specialty-Environmental/Environmental Health (College of Engineering), 10 (new ranking).

“I am pleased to see rankings improving or holding steady in diverse academic disciplines across our campus,” said UI President Sally Mason. “This is a testament to the UI’s commitment to maintaining excellence in our programs and continuing to offer a world class graduate experience.”

UI Executive Vice President and Provost Wallace Loh agreed.

"The rankings demonstrate that the University of Iowa continues to have many areas of academic excellence in our graduate programs,” Loh said. “This helps build on our vision for increased excellence in graduate education and our commitment to offer strong programs in a number of areas that will educate students to be leaders across our state, nation and world.”

John Keller, dean of the UI Graduate College, said he's pleased that a number of the university's graduate program offerings continue to be recognized as among the best in the nation.

"These outstanding graduate programs provide the foundation for the next generation of professionals in many fields,” Keller said. “Iowa's commitment to graduate education continues to produce top researchers, professors and leaders for the state, nation and world."

The UI offers 104 graduate degree programs, 75 of which lead to a doctorate.

The America's Best Graduate Schools guidebook will be available for purchase on April 20. Highlights of the graduate school rankings are scheduled for publication in the May 2010 issue of U.S.News & World Report magazine, available for newsstand purchase on April 27. All of the information in the printed guide, plus deeper rankings that are available only online, may be found at A subscription is required to access all of the data.

Each year, U.S.News ranks graduate programs in the areas of business, education, engineering, law, and medicine. These rankings are based on two types of data: expert opinion about program quality and statistical indicators that measure the quality of a school's faculty, research, and students. For the rankings in all five areas, indicator and opinion data come from surveys of more than 1,500 programs and some 11,000 academics and other professionals that were conducted in 2009.

U.S.News first published a reputation-only graduate school ranking in 1987. The annual America's Best Graduate Schools report began in 1990.
