University of Iowa News Release

Sept. 8, 2009

Students have increased access to University of Iowa arts events

Students now have dramatically increased access to University of Iowa performing arts events, as a result of an Arts and Cultural Events fee proposed by the UI Division of Performing Arts and approved by the Iowa State Board of Regents.

In exchange for a fee of $6-$12 per semester, based on hours of registration, UI students now qualify for free admission to many events that previously required an admission fee, and the cost of admission to major events produced by the Department of Theatre Arts, the Department of Dance and the School of Music will be $5, with a valid UI ID.

This includes the annual Dance Gala, the Mainstage and Iowa Summer Rep seasons of University Theatres, and productions of the UI Martha-Ellen Tye Opera Theater.

"One of the goals of the Division of Performing Arts has always been to offer tickets that are very inexpensive or free to students," said Alan MacVey, director of the division. "At last we're able to do so. Plays, dance concerts, operas, music events -- literally hundreds of them a year -- are now free to students. Even our high profile events are only $5. The arts are one of the things that make the UI special. I hope students will join us often and have a great time."

In addition, access for all students to nearly every Hancher-sponsored event -- featuring international touring artists in music, theater and dance -- has been reduced from $15 to $10, as a result of contributions to Hancher. Students can buy two tickets with an ID, and bring anyone they want with the other ticket. An additional discount for the simultaneous purchase of three or more events can reduce the per-event price to $8.50.

"We love seeing students in our audience, and we love offering them a really fantastic price -- just $10 for great shows like Straight No Chaser and Rob Lake Magic and so many more this season," says Chuck Swanson, Hancher's executive director. "Plus, it's great that we're able to offer college students the best price for 'Avenue Q,' a fantastic Broadway show that students are really excited about."

Because of the requirement of a valid UI student ID, discounted tickets are not available by phone or online. Events with advance sales are available at the Hancher box office in the Old Capitol Town Center/University Capitol Centre, next to Sweets & Treats. Any remaining tickets will be available at the events.

UI arts events are searchable on the UI Master Calendar: http://calendar.uiowa.edu. For additional arts information, visit http://www.uiowa.edu/artsiowa.
