UI Children's Hospital, Iowa Hawkeyes announce Kid Captains

Thirteen current and former patients of University of Iowa Children's Hospital have been selected as Kid Captains for the 2009 UI Hawkeye football season.

The Kid Captain Program is a partnership between UI Children's Hospital and the Iowa Hawkeyes to honor UI Children's Hospital patients and celebrate their inspirational stories.

Nearly 350 nominations were submitted from across Iowa and surrounding states, and from as far away as Texas and New York.

"The nominations we received told truly amazing stories of the courage and perseverance shown by these children and their families. They face severe, life-threatening and life-altering illness with incredible grace and good humor. These families' stories are all inspirational and choosing children from just 12 families to be Kid Captains was unbelievably difficult," said Michael Artman, M.D., physician-in-chief at UI Children's Hospital and professor and head of pediatrics at the UI Roy J. and Lucille A. Carver College of Medicine.

"On behalf of our whole team of pediatric health care providers, I thank all the families for sharing their wonderful stories and for reminding us what a privilege it is for us to care for these remarkable children and their families," he added.

A multidisciplinary committee comprised of clinical care staff, professional staff and representation from UI Children's Hospital patient advisory group selected the Kid Captains.

Children selected as Kid Captains for the home games are:
--Jacob Endress of Geneseo, Ill.
--Chloe Dardis of Carroll.
--Kristin Klemesrud of Osceola.
--Kelby Telander of North Liberty.
--Jack Koehn of Mt. Vernon.
--Lucas and Nathaniel Anderson of Davenport.
--Clarissa Kraayenbrink of Sioux City.

Children selected to be honorary Kid Captains for the away games are:
--Trae Hamilton of Urbandale.
--Cal Kunnert of Hazel Green, Wis.
--Kyle Roseman of Bettendorf.
--Nikolas Ball of Kellogg.
--Savannah Erck of Alexandria Bay, N.Y.

Children selected as Kid Captains for home games will receive four game tickets, plus parking accommodations, to attend a 2009 Iowa Hawkeye home football game. The Kid Captain will have pre-game field access and photo opportunities, and will be an honored guest for the pre-game coin toss at midfield.

All Kid Captains, including the honorary away game captains, will have their individual stories told throughout the football season and will receive a commemorative jersey.
