Oct. 30, 2009 UPDATE: This release contains updated information in regard to ordering tickets. Tickets for the Band Extravaganza are $5 in advance and $7 the night of the show. Annual UI Band Extravaganza will be Nov. 9 at Carver-Hawkeye Arena The University of Iowa Band Extravaganza, always one the most popular annual events on campus presented by the UI School of Music, will be performed at 7:30 p.m. Monday, Nov. 9, in Carver-Hawkeye Arena.
This year's performers will be the three top bands at the UI: the Symphony Band, under the direction of Richard Mark Heidel; the Johnson County Landmark (JCL) jazz big band, under John Rapson, UI director of jazz studies; and the Hawkeye Marching Band, under Kevin Kastens.
JCL is the UI's ensemble devoted to the performance of original works by the great composers of the big-band jazz repertory. The band will perform "Pythodd Fellows" by John La Barbera, Gerald Wilson's "Blues for Yna Yna" and "Friday Night at the Cadillac Club" by Bob Berg. Because the Hawkeye Marching Band is a big draw for ardent Hawkeye fans, Band Extravaganza performances always feature a sea of black-and-old-gold in the audience. This year the band will recap music from the 2009 marching season. The biographies of the faculty director are accessible at http://www.uiowa.edu/~music/bios/faculty.htm.
