Dorman receives Lola Lopes Award for Undergraduate Student Advocacy

Jane Dorman, director of admissions and first-year experience in the University of Iowa College of Engineering Student Development Center, is the recipient of the 2009 Lola Lopes Award for Undergraduate Student Advocacy.

The UI Office of the Provost created the Lopes Award as a way for the university to recognize administrators, staff or faculty outside of their teaching role who serve as strong and effective advocates for undergraduate students and the undergraduate experience.

As director of admissions and first-year experience, Dorman is responsible for recruiting students to the college and guiding them through their first undergraduate year.

Many students cite Dorman's personal interest in them and their success in the summer orientation programs that she hosts as a reason for choosing Iowa.

Dorman pioneered several programs to promote the success of admitted students in their first year, including "Engineering Connection," a mentoring program that matches incoming students with experienced engineering students; and the "Men in Engineering" living/learning community, which has grown from 25 to 200 undergraduate students since its inception.

The award is named in honor of Lola L. Lopes, former associate provost for undergraduate education and professor emerita of management and organizations in the Tippie College of Business.

Fellows help Hygienic Laboratory with flu surveillance

Two emerging infectious disease fellows are assisting University Hygienic Laboratory with statewide influenza surveillance and other public health testing. Funding is provided by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Association of Public Health Laboratories.

Kara Levinson, public health graduate from the University of Michigan, and Anna Van Stelten, a master's student in food safety and microbiology at Colorado State University, will work for one year at the lab, which is located on the UI Research Park campus in Coralville.

Van Stelten and Levinson join Brock Neil and Jeremi Mullins, who became lab fellows this past year. With four fellows total, the University Hygienic Laboratory is a leader in hosting these fellowships among similar labs nationwide. Learn more at
