Oct. 24 fund-raiser will also celebrate UI Museum of Art's 40th anniversary
The Members Council of the University of Iowa Museum of Art (UIMA) will host the sixth annual "Museum pARTy!" from 8-11 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 24, in the Oakdale Ballroom of the Marriott Hotel & Conference Center, 300 E. 9th St., Coralville.
The event, chaired by Kristin Hardy, with Joyce P. Summerwill as honorary chair, celebrates the UIMA's 40th anniversary and will raise funds to support the Museum's flood relief efforts, exhibitions, and programming. "The Museum pARTy! is an important opportunity for community members to come together and support the Museum," Hardy said.
The evening will include a reception with hors d'oeuvres and wine, as well as live entertainment by local band The Recliners. Party attire is requested. Tickets for the Museum pARTy! may be purchased for $100. To reserve tickets, please call 319-335-3676. With each ticket purchase or donation of $100 to the Museum pARTy!, guests and contributors will be automatically entered in a drawing to win a two-night weekend stay for two at the Riverside Casino & Golf Resort, $50 dining at Ruthie's Steak & Seafood, and 18 holes of golf for two at the Blue Top Ridge Golf Course.
The UIMA sponsorship program, now in its third year, gives Museum contributors the opportunity to direct their support to specific programs, exhibitions, or events.
In celebration of 40 years of the Museum, the UIMA is releasing an anniversary book, "Building a Masterpiece: Legacy of the University of Iowa Museum of Art," featuring an essay by Abigail Foerstner, journalism professor at Northwestern University and author of "James Van Allen: The First Eight Billion Miles" and "Picturing Utopia". Copies will be available for purchase at the Museum pARTy! and Foerstner will be present to sign copies.
"The anniversary book is an important part of our celebration," UIMA Interim Director Pamela White said. "As we contemplate the Museum's future, it is vital for us to review the past, see how the Museum came into being, and remember the people whose generosity made the Museum the dynamic resource it has been for 40 years."
Last year, more than 300 art patrons gathered at The Museum pARTy! to celebrate and reaffirm the mission of the UIMA after the devastating effects of the 2008 flood on the Museum's former Riverside Drive building. The event raised $160,000, helping to secure the Museum's vitality for future generations.
The Museum pARTy! is made possible with support from generous sponsors and hosts. The 2009 pARTy! sponsors are James P. Hayes and Rohrbach Associates P.C. Architects. The 2009 pARTy! hosts include: Alan and Liz Swanson, Curt and Sharman Hunter, Gerald and Leesa Elseman, H.
