Belin-Blank Center honors Iowa youth with Scholastic Art Awards

More than 300 aspiring Iowa artists in grades seven through 12 had the opportunity to compete for Scholastic Art and writing awards thanks to the University of Iowa College of Education's Connie Belin and Jacqueline N. Blank International Center for Gifted Education and Talent Development Scholastic Art and Writing Award competition. The recognition ceremony and opening of the Gold Key exhibit was held Feb. 28 in Des Moines at the State Historical Museum of Iowa in collaboration with the Alliance for Young Artists & Writers.

This year, more than 300 students submitted 400 artworks to the regional competition, according to Clar Baldus, Belin-Blank Center administrator for visual arts, inventiveness, and rural schools programs. She added that 64 of those students received special recognition for their artwork.

The following levels of recognition were awarded:

--Gold Key: Artwork demonstrating the highest levels of achievement in technique, originality, and personal voice.
--American Visions Award Nominees: Regional Affiliates nominate five Gold Key artworks as "Best of Show." One National American Visions Award recipient is recognized from each region.
--Silver Key: Artwork demonstrating achievement worthy of recognition on the regional level.
--Honorable Mention: Artwork demonstrating creative potential.

In selecting award winners, an expert panel of judges looked for works that did the following: revealed an original approach to process, concept and subject matter and that transcended the parameters of a "classroom assignment"; demonstrated a high level of technical skill and a mastery of a particular medium; and showed evidence of the emergence of an individual's artistic vision or style and the visual expression of tone, form, critical thinking and conception.

Gold Key artwork is displayed at the State Historical Museum of Iowa in Des Moines through March 26.
