Local students attend percussion and piano camp at University of Iowa

Forty-five students from Iowa, Illinois and Florida are participating in the Iowa Summer Music Camp percussion and piano programs June 14-19 at the University of Iowa School of Music.

The students in the camp will present free public concert/demonstrations at the end of the camp at 7 p.m. Friday, June 19. The percussion students will perform in Room 180 of the UI Museum of Art building, and piano students will perform in Macbride Hall Auditorium on the UI Pentacrest. Both performances are free and open to the public.

The percussion camp is taught by Dan Moore, area head of percussion in the UI School of Music, and Mat Britain, a Nashville recording artist. Students in the camp explore a wide variety of topics including concert, marching, jazz and world percussion.

Teachers at the piano camp are UI School of Music faculty members Alan Huckleberry and Rene Lecuona. Campers receive daily piano lessons with Huckleberry and Lecuona as attend classes in music theory and piano literature.

The Iowa Summer Music Camp is sponsored by the UI School of Music and directed by Kevin Kastens, who also directs the UI Hawkeye Marching Band. It offers a variety of musical experiences for talented young musicians who have completed grades 8-12. All participants were recommended by their school music teachers.

The School of Music is part of the Division of Performing Arts in the UI College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.
