UI friends and family can reconnect Oct. 9-10 at homecoming
University of Iowa alumni and friends will have the opportunity to reconnect with former Hawkeyes, family and friends at this year’s homecoming weekend, Oct. 9-10.
Registration has begun for the celebration, sponsored by the University of Iowa Alumni Association (UIAA) and several UI colleges. The student members of the Homecoming Executive Council have chosen this year's theme, “Black and Gold Never Gets Old,” because being a Hawkeye never goes out of style. For the second year the Homecoming Council will partner with Habitat for Humanity and build a home for a family in need.
The weekend kicks off with the annual homecoming parade featuring student and alumni floats, the Hawkeye Marching Band and the Hawkeye Spirit Squad at 5:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 9, in downtown Iowa City. Following the parade, the UI will host a pep rally and coronation on the Pentacrest, followed by a concert by Augustana and The Temptations.
The Hawkeyes will be featured in prime-time coverage with kickoff at 7:05 p.m. Saturday for the homecoming football game vs. the University of Michigan.
“From the downtown parade, tailgates, educational seminars and tours, to the highly anticipated Iowa-Michigan football game, there is something for everyone,” Christina Wright, assistant director of programs at the UI Alumni Association, said. “Alumni will enjoy seeing the positive changes to campus, reconnecting with old friends and celebrating the black and gold spirit with many generations of the UI family.”
The Roy J. and Lucille A. Carver College of Medicine will welcome the return of graduates from the classes of 1974, 1979, 1984, 1989, 1994 and 1999, as well as Carver College of Medicine Iowa Minority Medical Alumni. Reunion events will also be held for College of Pharmacy and College of Dentistry graduates. The College of Engineering will welcome alumni to their annual Homecoming Tailgate Open House. Tippie College of Business graduates will be welcomed back at a cookout during the pre-parade barbeque on Friday evening.
Former Hawkeye Marching Band members are invited back to campus for an Alumni Band Reunion to reconnect with other former band comrades. Additionally, there will be an Iowa Spirit Squad reunion.
