Old Capitol Museum celebrates Beatrix Potter's birthday July 27
The University of Iowa's Old Capitol Museum will celebrate the birthday of famous children's author Beatrix Potter with tea, cupcakes, snacks and stories at 2 p.m. Monday, July 27, at the Coralville Public Library, 1401 5th St., Coralville.
The free, public event will feature favorite Potter tales told by Beatrix herself, as portrayed by drama historian Robin Cline. Later, children will have the opportunity to participate in a themed craft.
Potter, who was born July 28, 1866, is one of the 10 authors featured in the exhibition "'Fresh Threads of Connection': Mother Nature and British Women Writers," on display through Sunday, July 26 in the Old Capitol Museum's Hanson Family Humanities Gallery. Other authors in the exhibit include Potter, Jane Austen ("Pride and Prejudice"), Anna Sewell ("Black Beauty"), and Charlotte Brontâ ("Jane Eyre").

UI Hancher Showcase closeout sale will be July 31
Remaining inventory of the Hancher Showcase gift shop at the University of Iowa will be on sale from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday, July 31, on the plaza outside of Hancher Auditorium. The rain date is Aug. 7.
All items will be 50 percent off their original price. The inventory includes jewelry, children's toys, holiday decorative items, note cards, home accessories and hundreds of other items.
All proceeds from the sale will be used to support educational programs for area school children.
The showcase, which was located in the Hancher lobby, was closed as a consequence of the 2008 flood.
