Music Library temporarily moves from Voxman to Main Library

Over the winter break, the Rita Benton Music Library at the University of Iowa was moved from Voxman Music Building to the Main Library to provide greater access to the collection for music faculty, staff and students.

The Voxman Building has been closed since last June's flooding, but the largest music library in the state remained intact with little or no damage. From Monday Jan. 5, to Tuesday, Jan. 13, approximately 180,000 volumes of books, scores and periodicals were moved by the Carney-McNichols company, along with DVDs, CDs, LPs and VHS tapes, said Ruthann McTyre, head of the Music Library. Nearly all the shelving, supplies, and some of the furniture were also relocated, she added.

Course reserves, rare books, CDs and DVDs are now located at the south end of the fifth floor of the Main Library. The bulk of the music collection is located on the west side of the second floor. The materials can be accessed in the Main Library temporarily until a permanent home for the School of Music is determined.

During the fall semester and while the Music Library was closed, Libraries' staff retrieved books from Voxman that faculty and students requested, working in often dark and hot conditions, said Kristi Bontrager, public relations coordinator at the UI Libraries. Another reason for moving the collection to a more accessible location was the start of a class called "Introduction to Graduate Studies," a core class in the School of Music that makes extensive use of the music library collection.

Carney-McNichols crews and additional student help worked from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. most weekdays and half days on Saturday and Sunday to accomplish the move. The crews stopped working Saturday, Jan. 10, because of snow and high winds, but kept working the following days and wrapped all the carts in plastic to protect the materials, McTyre said.

The Music Library staff work in the south end of the fifth floor of the Main Library; McTyre's office is located in the Library's Information Arcade, Room 1015E. Online access to materials is still available through the Music Library Web site at:
