Jan. 13, 2009

A few tickets remain for St. Lawrence String Quartet concert Feb. 4

A few tickets still remain for the concert by the St. Lawrence String Quartet, presented by the University of Iowa Hancher Auditorium at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 4, at the Brown Deer Golf Club in Coralville.

The concert was to have included Roberto Sierra's "Songs from the Diaspora," a piece Hancher co-commissioned, but vocalist Heidi Grant Murphy is now unavailable to participate in the performance.

So the program is now: Joseph Haydn's Quartet in E-flat Major, op. 9, no. 2; Mendelssohn's Quartet in F Minor, op. 80; and the second-ever performance of John Adams' String Quartet, written for the St. Lawrence String Quartet's 20th anniversary.

The Grammy-nominated St. Lawrence String Quartet is the resident string quartet at Stanford University and the Spoleto USA Festival. Alex Ross of The New Yorker Magazine wrote, "The St. Lawrence are remarkable not simply for the quality of their music making, exalted as it is, but for the joy they take in the act of connection."

Tickets are $34 ($30.60 for senior citizens, $23.80 for youth and $15 for UI students). Tickets can be ordered online at

Beginning Jan. 13, the box office will be open for phone or walk-up business in Suite 107 in the south building of the Lindquist Center, at the corner of Madison and Burlington Streets, 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. weekdays.
